The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) is to be awarded the freedom of ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ in recognition of its service to the local community.
The honour was approved by councillors following a request from the Lieutenancy of ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ.
Formed in 2006, the Royal Regiment of Scotland is the amalgamation of the country’s six historic infantry regiments, including the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, formed in 1881, have a long association with ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ, and the regiment was itself granted the Freedom of the region in 1979 by what was then ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ District Council.
That historic legacy continues to be honoured within SCOTS today. The regiment maintains a strong relationship with the people of ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ, participating in community activities including local events and educational initiatives and offering support for the area’s veterans and their families.
Councillor Mark Irvine, Policy Lead for Corporate Services, said: “Conferring the Freedom of the county is one of the highest honours a council can bestow, signifying mutual respect and recognition of exceptional service.
“In its submission to the Provost of ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ, the Lieutenancy cited values such as dedication, courage and community which are synonymous with SCOTS.
“The decision to grant the Freedom of ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ to the regiment will be warmly welcomed across ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ and is much deserved recognition for its historical significance and the continuing contribution SCOTS makes to our communities.â€
